Space monkey

That the themes chosen to decorate things like children's pajamas are rigidly, almost laughably gender-sorted does not come as news, but the come-on I just received from Baby Gap (new PJs 19 bucks when you buy two) just earned a huge "come ON" from me.

I actually wanted to get some. The trucks, in particular, since Avi is almost out of the trucks he already owns and he does have opinions regarding sleepwear. I liked the trucks; I liked the dinos; I liked the space ships especially.Daring adventures in your sleep, what could be better?

Over on the girls' side, though... flowers. Some polka dots, more flowers. A lady bug. More flowers. Don't little girls DO anything? No hobbies, no adventures?

Wait, what's this?

Shopping monkey!

Honestly.

And no, she wouldn't wear the boys' ones, so it's pointless to try to strong-arm her into the space ships, for instance.  She does like space ships, but she really llikes pink. I want pink space ships. Why can't I have pink space ships?

I feel your pain as I try and find a dinosaur backpack that will not clash wildly with Linnea's jackets.

And not be a piece of sh--, but that's a whole other issue.

Andrea

Maybe we need to launch our own line.:
Blue PJs with flowers; pink space ships, backpacks in Hanna Andersson colors with dinos.

check it out! blue monkey GIRLs pjs! not a daisy in sight!

My daughter's current favorite pjs are her dinosaur pjs from Carters. I'm sure that they are supposed to be for boys since they are green, blue and brown...but she doesn't know the difference and doesn't care. (At least not yet at 2 1/2)

And bonus, I'll be able to save them for my son to wear someday. But it is in the minority since most of her clothes has some sort of "feminine" touch. The jeans have pink thread, the khakis have a ruffle on the pocket, the t-shirts have a little bow on the collar. Why can't the basics be truly gender neutral and reusable?

Jules

Uh-oh, I think I know someone who needs Shopping Monkey pajamas.

That would be the child who announced not long ago that she is going to be a "shopper" when she grows up because that's what she does best.

Can I blame the Gap?

Holly

I'm tired of feeling ragey about pointless and tacky gender themes in kids' clothes, but somehow that doesn't make me any less ragey about it.

Andrea

Holly, ha, me too and me neither.
