Mutton Dressed as Lamb, Already?

by Anna in Wearing

Have you ever had a moment when you realized your toddler was dressed like a baby? I had an “uh-oh” flash today at the playground when I realized my 22 month old was probably wearing age-inappropriate clothing. It was like wearing green on Thursday.

Spring has finally arrived, and I’m caught with no transitional clothing that fits him: I have winter outfits. I have some summer outfits, but for some reason I have no warm-weather pants, so I stuffed my son into last spring's Hanna Anderssons.

Hanna

Aren't they adorable? Isn’t it great the way Hanna clothes will last more than one season, even for a growing toddler?

Adorable, but, apparently, Not Cool. The other little boys my son’s age were wearing plain t-shirts with khaki or camo shorts. My kid stuck out like a sore, stripey, babyish thumb in his brightly-colored striped pants with a frog on the butt

The interesting part is that if my boy had been a girl in a similar outfit, she would have fit right in. It seems like when a boy hits the 18 month mark, he has to give up his bright, goofy clothing and dress like any other boy, be he two years old or twelve. Why are we in such a hurry to make our little boys conform? Does he really have to be a Man when he's still in diapers?

But no one cares except the other moms! (At least that's what I told myself when I dressed my boys in sailor suits and shorts with knee socks and cardigans until they were four....)

My kid still wears those exact pants, and a previous season version of the jacket, at age 3. I liked that style when he was a baby and young toddler, and now that he is old enough to have preferences, his preferences run to the bright, stripy, and animal-y. I'm sure he will age into "cool" preferences at some point, but until then, bring on the frog butt.
